me start with this. the big story of governor christie's two-hour defense yesterday was what he didn't say. why did the governor of a state, a man clearly with his eyes and heart on the white house, fail to ask anyone, anywhere, any time, what the hell was going on at the george washington bridge. when traffic stopped for hours, day after day after day after day, when the democrats in trenton were raising hell, when the media was jumping all over the story, when his two top guys over at the port authority were forced to resign, when all of this was popping on the front page and raging in the nightly news, this big bear of a politician, this guy who dominates the scene not once asked what the hell was happening. not only that, he openly and sarcastically refused to ask any questions. here he is on december 19th, three months in to this donnybrook, still refusing to ask, or act, or think, to do anything that might alert him, publicly alert him, to what his people had been up to. >> if you want to chase him around, chase him around. that's your business. but i'm not going to run around

where governor christie left off today. i want you, the people watching right now and the people involved in this escapade to answer some common sense questions. call them the smell test. did governor christie truly believe that the four days of long traffic backups at the george washington bridge last september were caused by a research project? if so, why didn't he put his foot down when it was going on day after day and try to stop the stupid thing? are we to believe that this famously blunt christie was stricken with a bout of meek passivity? and did he keep on swallowing this story for all these months since september? did he refuse to investigate who knew what was behind the traffic tieup because he bought that story or because he didn't? and are we to believe that the feisty governor was still in the dark on what his people were up to as he watched his two big-time appointments on the bridge authority itself being forced to resign? well, who is this new chris christie we haven't met before, believes whatever he is told, shows zero curiosity. only knows what his team is up

by a big margin. now, it wasn't quite a de blasio sized 49 point landslide. republican chris christie did win re-election as new jersey's governor by a lot. he won by 22 points which is a lot. but it is, if we're counting, less than half the size of the de blasio margin. on one level, who cares? the guy still won by a lot. maybe the governor does care about that. maybe he cares about not winning by a lot but as much as possible. today governor christie gave a long, long, long press conference responding to the scandal that has engulfed his administration. and that has possibly spiked his hopes of becoming the republican party's nominee for president. the "bergen record" newspaper yesterday as you know published documents that seemed to confirm democrats' longstanding allegations that lanes to the george washington bridge, most heavily traveled bridge in the world were shut down on purpose in order to create a huge traffic disaster in the town of ft. lee, new jersey, as some sort of political retribution. the governor had previously mocked the story and attacked the legislators who were in

, the players in the chris christie bridge-lane shutdown scandal are waiting for a knock at the door. right now. we do not know exactly who is being served with subpoenas tonight. the state assembly said today they will not release the names of the people who they are subpoenaing until those people have been served. they've been individually, personally handed their subpoenas in print in person. once that happens, once that i been served, we are expecting to get their names, the list of names. we're told to expect new subpoenas for roughly 17 individuals in the state of new jersey tonight and three entities. and by entities, that means organizations. we're told to expect that that may mean political organizations or campaigns. we're told that they are about to get served tonight as well as those individual people. now, why would political organizations get subpoenas in this scandal? well, when the governor's deputy chief of staff apparently ordered time for traffic problems in fort lee. if that was ordered up for political reasons, if fort lee was purposely gridlocked as a way of trying to hurt
